About Institute of Communications
Kerala Media Academy (Kerala Press Academy) was established by an act of the Government of Kerala in 1979 and subsequently it was decided that a institute under it should handle its academic activities. Institute of Communications launched the Journalism diploma course in 1986. Mr Thottam Rajasekharan, writer and former Director of Public relations Govt of Kerala was the first Director. Mr.N.N. Sathyavruthan, prominent journalist was Director for a long term.
Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism is a one year course. It is a fine launching pad for all aspiring Journalists. The best available faculty in the state handles all the topics of Journalism and Communication, right from the basics to the specializations. Emphasis is on practical training with a solid grounding on fundamental principles of journalism and allied areas. Students are expected to gain mastery in language and knowledge of socio-political and cultural issues. Special classes in visual media help those aspiring to enter electronic media and soft skills are imparted to hone the student’s personality and boost their confidence.
The Institute of Communication holds an excellent record of having more than 70% of its alumini working as Journalists in India and abroad.
It was in 1993 that Public Relations and Advertising course was started.This is also a one year course.
