Academy holds study camp on Internet
Kochi: Kerala Press Academy, in association with Kerala IT Mission organised two day study camp on Internet as a journalistic tool. Around forty journalists from media institutions in Kerala took part in the camp. This is the first camp in the series of six camps proposed for the current year, for improving the professional skill and knowledge base of journalists.
Camp was inaugurated by Anand Parthasarathy, prominent IT journalist on Wednesday at Hotel Presidency here. Academy chairman N.P.Rajendran welcomed the gathering. Anand Parthasarathy talked on the subject ” Harnessing the Internet edge:New media tools and techniques”.
Roy Mathew, Deputy Chief of Bureau of the Hindu, Thiruvananthapuram presented the paper on ‘How to verify the veracity on web content” and K.Anvar Sadat, former Executive Director of IT@School mission on Potential of Social media.
On Thursday Dr. Achuth Sankar of Kerala University (Knowledge freedom in the New Media Context), Adv. Sreeja Joshydev, Kerala High court (Cyber Law and Media) and Dr. Vinod Bhattarthirippad, Cyber Forensic consultant( (Cyber crimes) presented papers. V.G.Renuka, Secretary of the academy introduced the speakers. N.Rajesh, Exe. Council Member proposed the vote of thanks.

Tools of a journalist in the age of Internet

Kochi: The internet has been a game changer for the profession of journalism all over the world, over the past decade. It has opened up a new world of opportunities and challenges for journalists.
It offers journalists new skills to learn and new ways to gather and present news. It has proved to be a great help in the practice of the profession in a fast-changing world. By integrating internet technology into news-gathering techniques, journalists are now able to add great value to their work. But, the rapid growth of the social media, piggybacking the internet, has also added to the pressure on journalists.
At a workshop on ‘Internet as a journalistic tool’ organised by the Kerala Press Academy and the Kerala IT Mission here on Wednesday, a group of Kerala’s print and TV journalists got a peek at the opportunities thrown open by the latest internet and mobile-phone technologies.
Anand Parthasarthy, The Hindu’s former IT columnist, showed how the ‘new media’ is evolving and how it has had a huge impact on the way journalists practice their trade.
He encouraged journalists to carry at least some of the ten modern gadgets, which can be linked to the internet. These gadgets could greatly help gather news and present it in a better way.
K. Anvar Sadath, former IT@School executive director, explained the vast potential of the social media and introduced a series of online resources for journalists.
Roy Mathew, who maintains a website ‘cyberjournalist’ for the use of media persons, cautioned against the traps that are present in some of the online sources.
Two-day camp for journalists begins

The state-level two-day study camp for journalists, ‘Internet as a Journalist Tool’ organised by the Kerala Press Academy began here on Wednesday.
Around 40 journalists from various newspapers and news channels are participating in the camp. The sessions are aimed at equipping journalists in the changing media scene and the challenges and opportunities provided by the internet era.
The tools provided by the internet age have meant that every individual is qualified as a virtual journalist through the sharing and online facility that he or she has access to. The journalist not only has the challenge of surviving through this competition of innumerable virtual journalists but also making the best use of easy access to information which the scenario provides.
The camp began with a session on “Harnessing the Internet Edge: New media tools and techniques” led by senior IT journalist Anand Parthasarathy.
Other sessions in the course of the two days include “How to determine the veracity of web content” by Roy Mathew, “Potential of Social Media” by former executive director of IT@School K Anwar Sadath, “Art and Science of Google Search” by Dr Achuth Sankar, “Knowledgeable Freedom in the New Media Context” by Dr B Ekbal, former Vice-Chancellor, University of Kerala, “Cyber Law and Media” by Sreeja Joshydev and “Cyber Crimes” by Dr Vinod Bhattathiripad, cyber forensic consultant.

കൊച്ചി: ലാപ്‌ടോപ്പുകളുടെ ചെറുരൂപമായ നോട്ടുബുക്കുകള്‍ക്ക് പകരം ടാബ്‌ലെറ്റുകളും സ്മാര്‍ട്ട്‌ഫോണുകളും വ്യാപകമാകുന്നതായി പ്രമുഖ ഐ.ടി. ജേര്‍ണലിസ്റ്റ് ആനന്ദ് പാര്‍ത്ഥസാരഥി പറഞ്ഞു. നോട്ടുബുക്കുകള്‍ക്ക് നല്‍കുന്ന സേവനങ്ങളെല്ലാം സ്മാര്‍ട്ട്‌ഫോണില്‍ ലഭ്യമാകുന്നുണ്ട്. സ്മാര്‍ട്ട്‌ഫോണ്‍ വില്പന വര്‍ദ്ധിക്കുന്നതനുസരിച്ച് നോട്ടുബുക്കുകളുടെ വില്പന കുറയുമെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞു.
മാധ്യമ പ്രവര്‍ത്തകര്‍ക്കായി 'ഇന്റര്‍നെറ്റ് മികച്ച മാധ്യമ ഉപകരണം' എന്ന ശില്പശാല ഉദ്ഘാടനം ചെയ്യുകയായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം.
ഒരു പരിധിയിലേറെ ചെലവ് കുറഞ്ഞ ടാബ്‌ലെറ്റ് അപ്രായോഗികമാണ്. നിശ്ചിത ഗുണമേന്മയുള്ള വസ്തുക്കള്‍ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ടാബ്‌ലെറ്റ് നിര്‍മിക്കാന്‍ നിലവില്‍ കുറഞ്ഞത് അയ്യായിരം രൂപയാകും. അതിലും കുറഞ്ഞ നിരക്കില്‍ ടാബ്‌ലെറ്റ് നല്‍കുമ്പോള്‍ ഗുണമേന്മയില്‍ വിട്ടുവീഴ്ച ചെയ്യേണ്ടിവരും.
ഇപ്പോള്‍ ഒരു ലക്ഷം വരെ വിലയുള്ള സ്മാര്‍ട്ട് ടി.വി.കള്‍ക്ക് ഒരു വര്‍ഷം കൊണ്ട് വില കുറയും. ഡിജിറ്റല്‍ ടി.വി.ക്ക് 13,000 രൂപയ്ക്ക് ലഭിക്കുന്ന സംവിധാനം ഘടിപ്പിച്ച് സ്മാര്‍ട്ട് ടി.വി.യാക്കാന്‍ നിലവില്‍ കഴിയും. ഒരു വര്‍ഷത്തിനുള്ളില്‍ ഈ തുക 5000 രൂപയിലെത്തും. ഇതോടെ രാജ്യത്ത് സ്മാര്‍ട്ട് ടി.വി. വ്യാപകമാകുമെന്നും ആനന്ദ് പാര്‍ത്ഥസാരഥി പറഞ്ഞു.
സ്റ്റേറ്റ് ഐ.ടി. മിഷന്റെ സഹകരണത്തോടെ പ്രസ് അക്കാദമിയാണ് ശില്പശാല നടത്തുന്നത്. ഹോട്ടല്‍ പ്രസിഡന്‍സിയില്‍ നടന്ന ഉദ്ഘാടന ചടങ്ങില്‍ അക്കാദമി ചെയര്‍മാന്‍ എന്‍.പി. രാജേന്ദ്രന്‍, അക്കാദമി സെക്രട്ടറി വി.ജി. രേണുക, അഡീ. സെക്രട്ടറി എന്‍.പി. സന്തോഷ് തുടങ്ങിയവര്‍ സംബന്ധിച്ചു. റോയ് മാത്യു, അന്‍വര്‍ സാദത്ത് എന്നിവര്‍ ക്ലാസ് നയിച്ചു.
