Nair.T.K.G
TK Govindankutty Nair alias TKG excelled in different walks of public life such as author, politician and organizer. TKG was born on 18 June 1928 to freedom fighter TK Sankaran Nair and TK Janakiamma at Punnayoorkulam in Thrissur district.
TKG was arrested for his involvement in leading the students’ agitation during the 1942 Quit India movement. Later he was attracted to the principles of Communism. After intermediate he joined for graduation at Kolkatta, but was arrested for political activities. After three months of imprisonment, TKG was exiled to Madras.
It was in 1953 he joined as a staff in Navajeevan daily started by the communist party under the editorship of Joseph Mundasserry and after him he became the chief editor. As the editor of Navajeevan, TKG was arrested under official secret act for the publication of a top secret government document in his daily.
When Malayala Manorama started its Kozhikode edition, TKG joined as a member of the editorial board. Later TKG became the leader writer and a member of the editorial board of Bhashaposhni. TKG got his training in journalism from Thomson Foundation, London and later served as the Director of Journalism Training Programme of the Malayala Manorama.
TKG served two terms as the Chairman of the Kerala Press Academy. The Kakkanad campus of the academy was constructed during his period. As a trade union activist, TKG worked hard for the growth of the Kerala Union of working journalists. He served the union three terms as its state president and also a council member of national federation.
He translated the famous work Freedom at Midnight co-authored by Dominique Lapiere and Laurie Collins into Malayalam as Swathanthriam Ardharathriyil. Simplicity and humility were the hallmarks of his personality. This noble style reflected in his writings also
Earlier TKG had served several political positions such as member of CPI state council, Councillor of Thrissur Municipality.
He is survived by Sulochana, his wife; Sandhya and Chithra his daughters and Adv. V.G. Arun, his son.
